Who, one may ask, was Dan Cook (c. 1825-1883)?
Evidently originally from Genesse, NY, Dan went west with his older brother Seth, working in Montana, Idaho, and California mines. They met John Boyd in Virginia City, and all three were well-established in the Nevada mining industry by 1870. In 1876 the group purchased a low-producing mine in Bodie (CA) for $75,000 which proved to be a bonanza (the stock shares shot up from $3.75 in December 1877, to $53 in July 1878). They sold out in the early 1880 and moved to San Francisco.
Sometime before this, Dan had married the daughter of Big-Four Railroad lawer David Doughty Colton (1832-1878), and inherited Colton's ranch near Danville (re Daniel Inman, who purportedly named it after his mother's hometown of Danville, VA).
Meanwhile the Cook brothers' father, Ira, had settled in San Rafael. Dan and Seth evidently took charge in lanscaping family holdings around what was later named Boyd Park -- for crony John, who had been introduced to their father's granddaughter, Louise Cook Arner, married her two weeks after Dan's death in 1883 at San Francisco's
Colton Mansion (destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, and now a park adjacent to Grace Cathedral --
note Charles Crocker's
spite fence around Nicholas Yung's holdings [1880-1904]), and been gifted the
Boyd Gate House, which serves as San Rafael's historical museum to the present day.
Dan's Danville ranch was passed to Seth, and thence to Louise Cook Arner Boyd, frequented as a summer home by her daughter, the polar explorer Louise Arner Boyd --
the present property now held by Diablo Country Club,
near those six promontories of Fossil Ridge traversed by South Gate Road....
