December 31 - The Last Light Shall Become First

Blessings to all, on a still New Year's Eve 2018, looking for 2019 to overtake us in the Moon Room of Rumsey House (Capay Valley, Yolo County, California), surveying the setting sun over Blue Ridge, part of the Interior Coast Ranges, as this blog continues at markalburger2019.blogspot.com....

51st and final day of fall,

since we'll designate any days with

highs in the 50's-60's

in the coming year

as spring --

heading up country on

505 --

into Yolo with views of the Sierra and

Coast Ranges,

west

through

Esparto,

between

Capay

and

Lamb Ridges,

past Scarps Ranch, and

northwest on 16, near an evidently notorious spot,

then beyond

through

Brooks, by

Canon School, the

Rancheria, and

Blue /

Sweitzer

Ridges

through Guinda

and

Rumsey

to

our

evening's

accomodations.

Upon

walking

through the

door, lo and behold, fine baby grand and toy pianos, playing John Cage's eponymous work (an almost-reasonable attempt at the first two movements by memory),

getting to know innkeeper Camila Barry, who has connections to San Rafael Highlands and Tiburon Westminster Presbyterian Church, plus enthusiasms for early and world musics (shown here in the upper lounge with harmonium

and

Victoria Lindsay Levine's

Writing American Indian Music, 2002).

Checking out the panoramic views as

the sun sets locally behind Blue Ridge, and

spending a bit of time with Camilla's family,

Harriet and I

determine

a

quick

trip back to the

Corner Store

for the

evening's provisions

is

in order.

Then a

head back to the

wonderful

prospect,

a

knowingly-appointed property whose owner clearly appreciates

art, education, music, and nature.

Following this,

out again for a walk on the main route,

from Rumsey House's front door

to

views

west

and

north

towards Blue Ridge and Cache Creek Canyon.

Reverse

course

around

the

property's

perimeter --

16

south

and

Rumsey

Canyon

Creek

north,

over

the

bridge

briefly --

and back onto the grounds proper,

inspecting the Cottage

and

porch

areas.

Night, excellent company,

many books, and

Happy New Year to all!
